Coming into the winter months we as surfers all tend to travel. Whether it be up or down the coast or to exotic locations like Indo and the South Pacific, these areas tend to light up from March through to October. The staff here at Surfculture are in a fortunate position to test out plenty of boards every year, we feel that this feedback is crucial when helping you to select that perfect board for a trip. Here we will give you a little run down on what the boys in store are riding when the waves are on.
FROGGY
Home break: North Steyne
Weight/Height: 85kg / 6’1
Boards:
- Chilli Spawns, 6’1 x 19 x 2 3/8
- JS monsta 3, 6’0 x 19 1/8 x 2 3/8
- JS Evolution, 6’4 x 18 3/4 x 2 1/2
Travelled to: Bali / Gland / Sumbawa / NZ RAGLAN / in the last 12 months
Feedback: Mostly ride standard short boards from 2 feet up. Travel with 2 of the same board on all trips just in case of damage / snap etc. For locations with bigger swells and down the line waves will take the step up.
Prefer adding extra thickness on Step ups to give more float and allow easier paddling into waves.
Boards: 5’9 x 19 1/2 x 2 5/16 JS Revolution II 27L and 5’11 x 18 3/4 x 2 5/16 Chilli Spawn 27L -
Travelled to: South Bondi I’m pretty lazy when it comes to looking for waves in Aus. I probably surf more in Indo than I do anywhere else aside from Bondi. In saying that, I do venture up to the Gold Coast for swells a few times a year. Love surfing the points.
Feedback: In terms of boards My go to at the moment is the 5’11 Spawn by James “Chilli” Cheal. I find it goes well in a variety of conditions and deals with the soft fat sections of but also is performance enough to go top to bottom when a section presents itself…My Revolution is a LIFE SAVER! Without that board i would go insane and is a well needed stick for the waves I have to deal with on a day to day basis.
CHRIS FRIEND
Home break: From the Sunshine Coast, but now living and surfing the Bondi dream.
Weight/Height: 80kg / 185cmBoards: - 6’0 x 19 x 2 3/8 Chilli Spawn 27.8
Travelled to: Norway, Sweden, Azores Islands, Fuerteventura
Feedback: Best all round short board of 2014, hands down. Suits all conditions from 1-2 ft sloppy Bondi to solid 4-6ft reefs in the Canaries. I’ve been riding boards from Chilli for a few years, and got a couple Spawns this year after I saw Mitch Coleborn riding them at Newcastle. I’ve had three since and can’t recommend them more! The perfect all rounder. I ride it with Mick Fanning large FCS 2 fins.
ROHAN WILCOX
Home break: Bondi
Weight/Height: 55kg’s – 5’4
Boards:
- Fred Rubble EPS 5’4 x 18 x 2 20L
– Hypto Krypto 5’0 x 19 x 2 1/16 20.5L
Travelled to: Maroubra – Bondi – Forster
Feedback: I ride my Fred rubble when the waves are clean. Little three foot peaks and barrels this week at Maroubra most probably the best i’ve seen it in a long time the Fred Rubble seems suits little punchy sucky conditions or if the wave stands up a little more. Ive been having a bit more fun riding the little 5’0 Hypto Krypto cause the round pin seems to drive through the fatter/flat waves better and the flat rocker helps alot too. I like to ride short boards equal to my height which tends to help find the right medium between functional turns and airs.
Home break: Bondi
Weight/Height: 70 Kg’s / 6’0
Boards:
- JS Monsta 3 5’11 x 18 5/8 x 2 1/4 25L
- JS Lowdown 5’11 x 18 1/2 x 2 1/4 25 L
Travelled to: Forster – Cronulla – Thirroul
Feedback: The Lowdown is my every day kinda board at this time of year. Because its flatter it seems to work well out Bondi, but still has enough curve that it goes when the waves are on. I also love my Monsta 3, I ride this when the waves are
really pumping and I’m down the coast. I woulddefinitely take this to Indo with me.
